Craig McLachlan files defamation proceedings against media and accuser

Craig McLachlan is an Australian actor and musician who previously won the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television. He is best known for appearances in Neighbours, Home and Away and The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

On 1 February 2018 McLachlan filed defamation proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales in response to a joint investigation between the ABC and Fairfax Media that reported allegations he sexually harassed several former colleagues in the course of the 2014 season of The Rocky Horror Show. McLachlan played raunchy transvestite Dr Frank-N-Furter in the production. Christie Whelan Browne, an accuser and former co-star, has also been named as a defendant.

The Statement of Claim extensively describes Browne as “herself a notoriously foul-mouthed person who publicly distributed offensive matter and had expressed interest in deviant sexual practices.”

McLachlan is represented by Mollison Keightley Management. Following an investigation by production company December Media, he was recently cleared of sexual harassment claims made by some colleagues on the set of the Doctor Blake Mysteries.

Following other recent high profile media defamation cases (Rebel Wilson’s $4.5 million win against Bauer Media for example), there is no doubt there will be a lot of interest in this one.

The matter is next in Court on 16 March 2018.
